Types of cutting edge damage and solutions
When drilling, the cutting edge of the drill can suffer from chipping, fracture and abnormal damage. In such cases it is important to take a closer look at the damage, investigate the cause and take countermeasures.

Large crater wear
Causes:
- Feed rate too high.
- Cutting speed too high.
Solution:
- Decrease the feed rate.
- Lower the cutting speed.
- If an indexable type drill is used then change to a different grade of insert.
Chipping/fracture
Causes:
- It is possible that there is too much runout, therefore too much load being placed on the cutting edge.
- It is possible that the rigidity of the work clamping is insufficient. This can be seen when the drill exits the hole.
Solution:
- Ensure that the runout is set to less than 0.02mm.
- Decrease the feed rate and reduce the load when exiting hole.
