Drills are cutting tools that have a cutting edge at the point of the drill. Drills have an integral flute designed into the body to evacuate the chips generated when machining. Drills come in a wide range of geometries based on different applications, machining methods, and materials.
In general, drills have the following features.
- As the hole is drilled, the generated hole acts as a guide for the drill.
- The thrust generated works in the axial direction of the drills centre line.
- Drills have 2 cutting edges, symmetrically positioned. The cutting forces generated act in a direction perpendicular to the tool axis, and therefore no bending moments occur.
- Drilling is a highly efficient method of machining and enables high metal removal rates to be achieved
