The pyramid below describes different materials according to machinability, cutting conditions and tool life.
Ductile cast iron (at the bottom of the pyramid), offers good machinability and a wide range of cutting conditions as well as a long tool life.
Ceramcis (at the top of the pyramid) on the other hand is hard to machine and there are only a few cutting conditons which will work. This material also shortens the tool life.
