Oil fields
These standards are developed for the oil industry; drilling and pumping pipes.
Aircraft industry
Similar to ISO and UN but with higher tolerances, developed specifically for the aircraft industry. The reason for the higher tolerances is for safety.
Defence industry
Strong profile used for heavy and large castings, that's why you can find this thread in the defense industry. The defense industry doesn't really give out any detailed information about where these screw threads are applied so no real examples can be given.
Lifting equipment
These threads are used in applications for lifting equipment eg. docks and cranes etc.
The Buttress threads have a non symmetrical profile and because of that very easy to move the screw in one direction while on the second you have self lock.
Power transmission
These type of threads can be found in use in machining centres etc where something heavy needs to be moved laterally. All trapezoidal shapes are relatively strong and hence main use is for power transmission.
Tubes
These types of threads are used in the oil, gas, water, chemical and automotive industry. The conical threads have the advantage of perfect sealing and hence used for pipe connections for liquid and gas supply, fittings, hydraulic components, sealing caps for valves
Machinery
The ISO, UN and BSW are the most popular standards for general purpose machinery, automotive industry, mining machines, molds, watch cases (the fine pitches of ISO like 0.5mm), fittings and valves (W standards).
Food industry
Generally in the food & beverage industry, work pieces are of stainless steel for corrosion resistance.
The main reason for this type of thread being used is in the ease of cleaning. The thread groove is quite open so permitting easy access to remove waste. That's very important for industries that demand sterile and hygienic working environments.
Pipes
These types of threads are used in a wide range of industry such as oil, gas, water and chemical. The NPS and NPSM threads are designed parallel and are used in applications where there is little chance of leakage or low pressure side.
