Group S includes superior heat and corrosion-resistant alloys and superalloys. Very high cutting temperatures are generated when machining these materials.
Due to high cutting resistance, temperatures can easily escalate when machining heat resistant Ni-based alloys, and strong, light Ti alloys. In addition, because of the low thermal conductivity of these materials, the heat generated tends to accumulate at the cutting edge.

To machine group S materials, care should be taken regarding cutting temperatues. To effectively prevent cutting temperatures from escalating, choosing a tool geometry that provides a sharp cutting action is necessary. Even with the use of the correct tool, high cutting heat is generated and this necessitates that heat resistant tool grade is selected. In addition to this, forced curling of chips will further increases cutting resistance therefore care should also be taken to select the optimum chip breaker geometry.
To reduce the cutting resistance as much as possible, breaking of the chips is usually necessary. This produces adverse effects on the surface finish and products made from these materials generally require a good surface finish. Therefore it is necessary to control the chip disposal direction rather than breaking the chips.
