Wedge type
This is a method used to clamp an insert without a hole. There are two variations of this method. One method is a front wedge type, where the wedge locates on the rake face of the insert, the other method is a rear wedge type, where the insert locates on the face of the wedge.
The advantage of the wedge type is that it is possible to adjust the run-out of the cutting edge, therefore making it possible for use when high surface accuracy is required. However there is one drawback and that is,
the problem the insert location is not as secure as a screw-on type. Therefore if used at high-spindle
speeds there is a possibility that the inserts could
come loose.
Screw-on type
The screw-on type is as it says, a method in which the insert is located in the chip pocket with the use of a locating screw. A face mill that uses the screw-on method can be used at higher-spindle speeds. Also, as the insert is secured with a screw repeatability can be easily maintained. This type of clamping method is often used for non-ISO inserts.
